The Rise of Pickleball: 4.2M to 24.3M Players in Five Years

The numbers behind pickleball’s extraordinary U.S. participation boom from 2020 to 2025.

Pickleball’s modern growth can be summarized by one extraordinary comparison: about 4.2 million Americans played in 2020. By 2025, the figure had reached 24.3 million.

The acceleration

SFIA reports that participation increased 479% from 2020 to 2025. The recent annual sequence shows how quickly the curve steepened: 8.9 million participants in 2022, 13.6 million in 2023, 19.8 million in 2024 and 24.3 million in 2025.

The audience changed too

The 2026 SFIA Pickleball Single Sport Report says players ages 13–24 now have the highest participation rate of any age segment. Women account for 42.9% of participants, up from 38.6% in 2020.

Infrastructure followed

USA Pickleball’s 2025 annual growth report lists 82,613 known courts across 18,258 locations and 104,828 members. Court databases are not the same thing as a complete census of every playable court, but the direction of travel is unmistakable.

The important shift: pickleball is no longer best understood as a novelty growth story. It is becoming a large, diversified participation market with its own infrastructure, equipment economy and media ecosystem.
