How many people play pickleball in India?

The honest answer in 2026 is that no public national census gives a defensible exact total. Credible-looking figures currently range from 50,000+ to 250,000 — but the sources use different definitions and rarely publish enough methodology to make them directly comparable.

Why a single number is misleading

“How many people play pickleball?” sounds simple, but participation statistics can refer to very different populations: registered federation members, tournament players, repeat recreational users, app or venue customers, people who played at least once during a year, or an estimated national active-player base.

Those categories are not interchangeable. A federation can count people inside its own ecosystem without capturing every recreational player. A booking platform can see real court demand but only within the venues or transactions it covers. A market operator may combine internal booking data, venue relationships and extrapolation. Unless the definition, period, sampling frame and extrapolation method are published, two figures cannot be treated as competing measurements of exactly the same thing.

The strongest primary-source figure is 50,000+

The Indian Pickleball Association currently states that it has 50,000+ players, alongside 500+ professional players, 100+ ranking tournaments and coverage across 27 states. The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports lists the Indian Pickleball Association among the recognised National Sports Federations for 2025.

That makes IPA's number useful, but it still should not automatically be read as “all Indians who play pickleball.” The homepage does not publish a methodology explaining whether the 50,000+ figure means registered members, players participating through affiliated state bodies, a broader federation estimate, or another definition.

There is also evidence of changing federation counts over time: an older IPA About page still says its amateur base exceeds 10,000 and mentions 200 elite professionals, while the current homepage reports much larger figures. That is consistent with growth, but it is another reason to date-stamp every figure rather than mix pages from different update cycles.

Why the 150,000 estimate is plausible but not independently reproducible

Upstox reported in 2026 that active participation had risen from approximately 60,000 players in 2024 to more than 150,000 in 2026, alongside growth from roughly 200 dedicated courts to more than 1,200.

Those figures broadly fit the visible expansion of venues, tournaments and commercial investment. But the article does not expose a national sampling framework or player-level dataset. We therefore treat 150,000+ as a reported market estimate, not as a measured national census.

Why 250,000 should be treated as an industry estimate

NDTV reported a still higher figure in May 2026: more than 250,000 active participants and over 2,500 courts. The figures were attributed to Siddhant Jatia, founder and CEO of pickleball platform Picklebay.

That attribution matters. An operator embedded in venue discovery and bookings can have useful market visibility, but the figure remains an industry estimate unless the underlying national dataset and methodology are published. It should not be converted into a hard statistical fact simply because it appeared in a major news outlet.

50,000 vs 250,000 does not necessarily mean somebody is wrong

The fivefold gap can arise partly because the figures may describe different universes. A federation-linked count can be materially smaller than a broad estimate of recreational participation. Conversely, a national market estimate can be materially larger than the number of people whose activity can be directly observed through one institutional system.

The problem is not that multiple estimates exist. The problem is that public articles frequently present them without defining the denominator.

It would be easy to average the public numbers and announce that India has roughly 150,000 or 175,000 players. That would create false precision.

A useful independent estimate would require a transparent model: verified venue counts, booking activity, repeat-player assumptions, federation registrations, tournament participation, overlap adjustments and a defensible way to account for private residential and institutional courts. We do not yet have enough of those inputs to publish a proprietary national number.

The better route is bottom-up. Pickleball Cosmos is beginning to build an India court and venue dataset city by city, with source and verification dates attached. As that dataset develops, it can eventually support better estimates of infrastructure, utilization and participation rather than recycling national headline numbers.
