Wrong Score Called in Pickleball: Can You Stop the Rally?
Yes — but only within a narrow window. Under the 2026 USA Pickleball rule, a player may stop the rally to challenge the score before the return of serve is hit and before the ball becomes dead.

Why “before the return” is not the whole rule
The 2026 wording requires both conditions to remain true: the return of serve has not been hit and the ball has not become dead. That matters if the serve itself ends the rally. Once the ball is dead, the rally is in the books even if no return was hit.
Three examples
Wrong and timely: the server calls 5-3-2, but the correct score is 5-3-1. The receiver stops play before returning the live serve. Correct the score and replay.
Correct score challenged: a player stops the rally because they mistakenly think the score was wrong. The stoppage is a fault on that player.
Too late: the serve is returned and only then does a player stop the rally to question the score. That is a late challenge and a fault. If nobody stops play and the rally finishes, the result stands and the score is corrected before the next serve.
Different from the wrong server or receiver
A wrong score call concerns the score announced before the serve. A wrong server, receiver or position concerns who should be serving, receiving or standing where. The remedies are not interchangeable.

What changed for 2026?
USA Pickleball approved a clarification defining when a wrong-score challenge produces a replay and when stopping play produces a fault. In the reorganized 2026 rulebook, the provision appears under Rule 6.F, “Challenging the Score Call.”
