Pickleball Scoring: Why 0–0–2 Makes Sense

Doubles scoring sounds complicated because the score call contains three numbers. Once you know what each number represents, the system becomes much easier.

The three numbers

A score such as 4–2–1 means the serving team has 4 points, the receiving team has 2 points, and the first server for that team is serving.

Why games can begin 0–0–2

The opening serving team starts with only one service turn before the first side-out. Calling 0–0–2 represents that special opening state within traditional side-out scoring.

Winning

Many recreational games are played to 11 and require a two-point margin. Tournament formats can vary, so the event format should always be checked.
