Can a Pickleball Serve Hit the Net?

Yes. In 2026, a serve may touch the net and still be legal. What matters is where the ball goes next.

What the 2026 rule says

USA Pickleball Rule 7.E requires the serve to travel to the correct service court diagonally opposite the server. The ball must clear the opponent's non-volley zone and may do so with or without touching the net.

That makes the outcome straightforward:

There is no tennis-style let

Players coming from tennis often expect a serve that clips the net and lands correctly to be replayed. Standard USA Pickleball rules do not use that system. A legal net-touching serve remains live.

This is not an accidental omission. During the 2026 rule-change process, USA Pickleball rejected a proposal involving a net/NVZ let on a return of serve and stated that the rules do not allow a let on the serve. That reinforces the current treatment: net contact alone does not stop the rally.

The kitchen line is the important exception

Most court lines count as in, but the non-volley-zone line is different on the serve. The serve must clear the entire non-volley zone, including its line. So a ball that clips the net and then lands on the kitchen line is a fault, not a legal serve.

If the same ball clears the kitchen and catches the centerline, sideline or baseline of the correct service court, it is in.

What if the serve hits the net and then a receiver?

The key question is whether the serve has otherwise crossed the net legally and what happens before it bounces. USA Pickleball has separate rules governing receiver contact with a served ball before the bounce. For an edge case in sanctioned play, use the current Official Rulebook rather than treating every net-contact scenario as a “let.”
