Core Crushing vs Delamination in Pickleball Paddles
The terms are often used interchangeably. They should not be. Core crushing is damage to the internal core; delamination is separation between bonded layers. Either can change how a paddle plays, but the symptoms overlap enough that a home “tap test” is not a definitive diagnosis.
The short version: if the honeycomb or other internal core collapses, that is core crushing. If the paddle face or another bonded layer separates from the structure beneath it, that is delamination. A paddle can potentially experience one without the other, and informal sound or pressure tests can flag a problem without proving exactly which failure has occurred.

Core crushing: the internal supporting structure deforms, buckles or loses rigidity.
Delamination: bonded layers separate — for example, a face layer separating from the core.
Why the distinction matters: both can alter stiffness, rebound and consistency, but they are different structural failures and may require different diagnostic methods.
What core crushing actually means
Most high-performance paddles are sandwich structures: a face on either side of an internal core, with adhesives, perimeter structures and other reinforcements depending on the design. In a honeycomb paddle, the core provides much of the spacing and structural support between the faces.
Core crushing occurs when that internal structure is permanently compressed, buckled or otherwise damaged. Selkirk describes it as collapse or breakdown of the core such that the paddle loses rigidity and compresses more than intended. The company distinguishes manufacturing-induced core damage from degradation that can develop after repeated impact. That is a manufacturer explanation rather than an industry-wide standard definition, but it is consistent with the mechanical meaning of a crushed cellular core.
Importantly, core crushing does not imply one universal performance outcome. A damaged region could become less consistent, feel softer or “dead,” or in some constructions create more local flex and rebound. Claims that every crushed paddle simply becomes more powerful are too broad.
What delamination means
Delamination is separation between layers that are supposed to remain bonded. In a composite paddle, that can mean separation between a face sheet and the underlying core or separation within a laminated structure.
USA Pickleball itself uses this structural meaning. Its equipment-testing history says ultrasonic testing was introduced in 2023 to detect delamination in paddles and describes the condition as layers such as the core and surface beginning to separate. That is a stronger basis than treating “delamination” as slang for any paddle that suddenly feels hotter.
Delamination can change local stiffness because a face that is no longer fully bonded to the structure beneath it can move differently under impact. But again, a perceived trampoline effect is a symptom, not proof of the exact internal failure.
Why players confuse the two
The failures are hard to distinguish from the outside because both can change:
- sound at impact;
- local stiffness;
- rebound behavior;
- consistency across the face;
- the amount of flex felt when pressure is applied.
That overlap is why phrases such as “my paddle sounds hollow” or “it suddenly got hotter” should not be treated as a structural diagnosis.
Even current consumer guides disagree on the expected symptoms. Some describe crushed cores as creating dead spots and reduced power; others associate crushing with more rebound as the structure loosens. Those claims are not necessarily impossible to reconcile — construction, failure location and severity can produce different behavior — but the disagreement is exactly why Cosmos does not use sound or feel as a definitive classification.
Can a tap test diagnose core crushing or delamination?
No — not conclusively.
Tapping across the face can reveal a change in acoustic response. Pressing gently on different parts of the face can reveal a region that feels structurally different. Those are useful screening checks, especially when compared with how the same paddle behaved when new.
But a home test cannot normally tell you, with confidence, whether the underlying cause is a crushed cell structure, a failed adhesive bond, a cracked internal component or another local defect.
USA Pickleball's own testing history is instructive here: the governing body implemented ultrasonic testing to identify delamination during field testing. In 2026 it also described tournament paddle testing that evaluates paddle-face deflection, integrity and structural change. If governing-body testing uses instrumented methods, a knuckle tap should be treated as an indicator rather than laboratory confirmation.
Is a core-crushed paddle illegal?
The answer is more nuanced than “core crush equals banned.”
USA Pickleball's equipment framework requires a paddle to remain compliant throughout its lifecycle. Its current equipment FAQ says equipment may be decertified if it fails the conditions of certification, and specifically notes concern about paddles improving in performance as they break in. USA Pickleball has also adopted PBCoR testing to control excessive rebound or “trampoline” behavior.
Separately, the rules governing the hitting surface prohibit delamination and other structural irregularities such as holes and cracks. So visible or confirmed delamination is not merely a cosmetic issue under USA Pickleball rules.
Core crushing is different because the phrase itself is not a simple yes/no approval status. What matters is whether the damaged paddle still satisfies the applicable equipment rules and performance limits. A paddle model can be approved in the database while an individual, damaged specimen no longer behaves like the certified product.
If tournament legality matters, use the current USA Pickleball equipment rules and event testing process rather than assuming the model's original approval settles the condition of your individual paddle.
Does core crushing always happen in polypropylene honeycomb?
No. Polypropylene honeycomb is one common core architecture, and cellular structures can be vulnerable to local buckling or compression. But “honeycomb” is not one material specification, and construction differs by cell geometry, density, face bonding, perimeter reinforcement and manufacturing process.
Likewise, full-foam designs are not automatically immune to every type of structural degradation. They simply fail differently because the internal architecture is different.
This is an area where manufacturer marketing should be read carefully. A brand may legitimately design a core to reduce a known failure mode, but that is not the same as independent proof that the design cannot degrade.
What should you do if your paddle suddenly changes?
- Stop treating the change as normal break-in until you understand it. A sudden change in sound, flex or rebound is worth investigating.
- Compare the whole face. Look and listen for a localized change rather than relying on one impact.
- Inspect the edge and face. Cracks, visible separation or deformation are more meaningful than a vague change in tone.
- Document the problem. Photos, video and the paddle's serial/model information can help with a warranty claim.
- Contact the manufacturer. Structural failures may be evaluated under the brand's warranty policy.
- For sanctioned competition, follow event testing. Do not rely on a home tap test as proof that a suspect paddle is compliant.
Core crushing is not the same as ordinary surface wear
A paddle can lose surface texture without suffering an internal structural failure. Grip wear, edge-guard damage and cosmetic scratching are separate issues again.
That distinction matters for replacement advice. A worn face may reduce spin potential; a damaged core may change stiffness and rebound; delamination is a bond failure. Lumping all three together under “your paddle is dead” makes diagnosis less useful.
Bottom line
Core crushing is damage to the internal supporting structure. Delamination is separation between layers that should remain bonded. They can produce overlapping symptoms, and informal tests can alert you to a problem, but they cannot reliably identify every internal failure.
The most useful rule is simple: if a paddle's structure or performance changes materially, treat that as an equipment problem to investigate — not as a free performance upgrade.
